Palermo: Sicilian Cooking Class with Market Tour & Meal

About This Experience

This is a cooking class held in a private home rather than a commercial kitchen. You meet your host, a professional chef, at Piazza del Monte di Pietà and walk together to her apartment, which is a short distance from Mercato del Capo. Coffee and Sicilian biscuits come first, then you start work on fresh handmade pasta with a sauce built around seasonal ingredients.

While the pasta dough rests, the group heads out to Capo market. The host explains the produce on the stalls and you taste a selection of Sicilian street food along the way, so the walk doubles as a snack stop. The exact tastings depend on what the stalls have that day, and guests who have eaten street food elsewhere in the city can ask for something different. It is a relaxed way to see a working market without having to choose stalls yourself.

Back at the apartment you finish the pasta and make a traditional Sicilian dessert, such as almond or chocolate granita. The class ends with everyone sitting down to eat the meal together, with local Sicilian wine. The dish can change with availability, but the focus stays on home-style Sicilian cooking rather than a fixed restaurant menu. Because the meal is cooked and eaten together, the pace is relaxed and you finish the afternoon well fed.

Each guest leaves with the recipes and a small handmade Sicilian sweet. Two friendly dogs live in the home, so the class suits people who are comfortable around animals. Groups are small, and on quieter days some guests have had the host to themselves, though that depends on bookings and is not something the listing promises. The class is described as relaxed and family-like, with plenty of time to talk.

This was a highlight of our visit to Palermo. Enza is a generous and welcoming host, sharing with us her love and knowledge food. As a professional chef she gave us a great insight into traditional Sicilian food and wine. The visit to Capo Mercati (while our handmade pasta rested) was both interesting and delicious as we sampled a wide array of street food. The meal we shared of pasta followed by chocolate granita and brioche was enhanced by her warm and honest personality. An unforgettable day with a generous and welcoming host. A real highlight, and highly recommended.

Can not recommend this enough! Provvidenza was a great host, my boyfriend and I got extra lucky as we were the only guest that day so we had a great 1:1 experience and feel like we genuinely made a friend! If you’re looking for a real Sicilian experience Provvidenza is fantastic and makes you feel right at home in her home, not to mention the dogs, as someone who is not usually a huge dog lover I feel entirely in love with them both! 5 stars we left the experience with

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do we meet?

At Piazza del Monte di Pietà in Palermo. The group then walks together to the host's home, which is only a few steps from Mercato del Capo, so you do not need to find the apartment yourself.

Is it enough for lunch?

Yes. You taste street food at the market, then sit down to a homemade lunch of the pasta you cooked, plus a dessert and local Sicilian wine. Coffee and biscuits are served on arrival as well.

Is the market visit part of the class?

Yes. The group visits Mercato del Capo while the pasta dough rests, with a guided look at the produce and a tasting of typical Sicilian street food. It is included in the experience, not an optional extra.

Are there dogs at the host's home?

Yes, two friendly dogs live there. The listing asks guests to be comfortable around animals, and it says the class is not suitable for people with animal allergies. If you are nervous around dogs, consider another class.

Is it suitable for children?

The listing says children under 5 are not suitable, and strollers and baby carriages are not allowed. Older children who enjoy cooking and are happy around dogs may be fine, but check with the operator if unsure.
