Palermo: Street Food and History Walking Tour

4.8 (1,701 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This three-hour walking tour pairs five street food tastings with the main sights of Palermo's Old Town. The route starts at the Museo Archeologico Regionale Antonino Salinas on Piazza Olivella and passes the Opera dei Pupi puppet theatre, Teatro Massimo and Porta Carini before reaching the Capo market. The itinerary is laid out stop by stop, so you know in advance roughly how long is spent at each place, and the pace is steady rather than rushed.

The Capo market takes about an hour of the itinerary. Stalls sell local meat, seafood and produce alongside ready-to-eat snacks, and the tastings include sfincione, panelle, crocché and arancine, with a cannolo to finish. One drink is included, a beer, water or cola. Porta Carini, a short stop before the market itself, is also a tasting point, so the food starts before you reach the stalls.

After the market the walk continues to Piazza Beati Paoli, then to Palermo Cathedral, where the guide gives a short visit of around twenty minutes, and on along the Cassaro to the Quattro Canti and Pretoria fountain. The last stop is a bar near the Quattro Canti for the dessert. The tour finishes at Ruvolo Beer and Wine. Allow time for the dress code at the Cathedral, where shorts and bare shoulders are not accepted inside.

Cruise passengers can ask the guide for a pickup at 10:00 inside the port, just outside the terminal, and a later pickup can be arranged if the ship arrives late. Port drop-off is not included, although the finish point is about 20 minutes from the port and has a taxi rank. Hotel pickups in the Old Town can also be arranged on request for an extra fee, which is a chance to ask the guide for restaurant tips.

Our tour with Fabrizio was a fantastic way to explore Palermo. We got to try street food and had an informative tour of Palermo. We explored the markets and historic downtown, it was a great balance. Fabrizio was a kind and professional tour guide and we would definitely recommend this tour! Additionally, pack your walking shoes, and there are restrooms along the way. He was also very generous with the beer :) There’s also a vegetarian option for the arancina. Don’t hesitate and book this tour!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the tour start and end?

It starts in front of the Museo Archeologico Regionale Antonino Salinas, Piazza Olivella, 90133 Palermo, and ends at Ruvolo Beer and Wine near the Quattro Canti. The finish point has a taxi rank nearby.

Is it enough food for lunch?

The tour includes five street food tastings and a cannolo, plus one drink. Many people find that substantial, but the listing does not call it a full meal, so you may want a light snack afterwards if you have a big appetite.

Can I take it with a dietary restriction?

Dietary restrictions can be accommodated, but you must specify them during checkout. Because the tastings are fixed street food, it is sensible to also message the operator about allergies or vegetarian needs before the day.

Can cruise passengers join?

Yes. The guide offers a pickup at 10:00 inside the port, just outside the cruise terminal, on request, and a later time if your ship arrives late. Port drop-off is not included, though the finish point is about 20 minutes away.

Is there a dress code?

Yes, for the Cathedral. Men cannot wear shorts or tank tops, and women cannot wear shorts, miniskirts or tops. Bermuda shorts and T-shirts are allowed, and a light jacket can be bought at the entrance to cover shoulders and legs.
